A Message from Chief Nurse Officer RADM Mix

Profession Nurse

U.S. Public Health Service Nursing has a rich history spanning more than 75 years. The first nurses commissioned by the PHS were Nurse Cadets who pledged to serve their country after receiving training authorized under the Bolton Act of 1943. Since that time PHS nurses have continued to address critical public health needs and provide care and service for underserved populations.

Currently, PHS Nursing provides exciting opportunities in diverse roles across the federal government, including direct clinical care for agencies such as the Indian Health Service, Federal Bureau of Prisons, and ICE Health Service Corps. Whether you serve as a technically-skilled clinician or a proficient leader in health policy, research, or public health programs, PHS nurses assess needs, identify barriers and inequities, and translate findings into action to achieve wellness for, and in partnership with, individuals, populations, and communities. We stand ready at all times to deploy in response to disasters and public health emergencies – making a difference and having an impact on public health from preparedness through recovery.
